I was wondering myself about the meaning of the names in the Bible. Is there a reason for a particular person to be called by his or her name? So since the search function isn't working I will write my post anyway. So the first name I wanted to look up was of course Adam. in Hebrew the words in the original Torah don't have vowels, but we have a tradition that places vowels so we can pronounce all the words in the Bible correctly. Now in printed Bibles, the Hebrew has vowels. So with that introduction, I looked up the name Adam: Aleph, Dalet .and Mem in the Brown Driver's Briggs Bibical dictionary and got that Adam mean ground. mankind and a city in the Jordan Valley. It is also the name of an Israeli village north of Jerusalem. If we change the vowels a bit, then the letters Aleph, Dalet and Mem, we get Edom, one of the sons of Itsak, (Issac). If we use different vowels, Adom, still using the same letters we get the word RED. Very interesting, don't you think? I will look up more names in the coming days.

If Adam means ground it can also mean soil/ clay , out of which the statue of the first man was fashioned by God.
