Lately, there have been too many tellings of classic fairy stories and I feel its time I told my version of a classic fairy story.
Cinderella
Back in about 1600 when king Louis of France was on the throne, a poor family living on a small farmlet on the outskirts of Paris, There was the Husband a wood merchant, his wife a seamstress who was with child.
Around their home was a forest of black cinder trees.
One day while sewing a gown for a wealthy customer the wife felt the gut reaching of the onset of labor pains as placed the last stitch into the gown.
As painful as it was she made her way outside where her husband was cutting wood from the trees.
As she arrived in the middle of the black cinder forest her waters broke and gave way for her baby daughter.
At the sound of baby cries the husband rushed to her wife's side and named the baby Cinderella after the cinder trees that surrounded their home.
As weeks turned into months and Cinderella became a toddler her mother became weak with exhaustion and on Cinderella's 3rd birthday her mother passed away in her sleep.
For 9 years Cinderella and her father lived and worked together bringing wood to the people of Paris.
And one day while in Paris Cinderellas father met a wealthy widow with 2 daughters who were both very beautiful but however, they had a heart that was uglier and darker than the darkness on a moonless night.
There was Corina who had long blonde flowing hair with green eyes who walked like a model in Paris at the hight of the fashion season who looked down on anyone who appeared to below her status,
Then there was Fontina who had dark hair like her mother who would look at you like you were some rotting carcas being shoved under nose.
Shortly after Cinderellas father had met the widow he married her and her daughters and her came to live at the humble home.
By this time word of the marriage had spread and Cinderellas father was now doing very well for himself.
He built a small fortune and was now more than able to provide for his family of 4 women.
One day while collecting more wood , Cinderella's father felt a pain in his chest and dizzy.
So he decided to take a few days to rest and get his strength back.
Sadly a month later , Cinderella's Father was found dead.
Several days after his death when things seemed to have settled Cinderella was woken from her sleep by her step mother .
"I have your fathers will" she would say to her " on your 18th birthday you are to receive your fathers fortune and the land that we live on."
Before his death Cinderellas father had neglected to tell anybody when Cinderellas birthday was so for a while and as long as she could Cinderella's Step mother would always tell anyone who asked that Cinderella was 14 and she was just tall for her age.
When Cinderella was 17 , her step mother said to her " Its time for you to earn your keep around here , as I cant take your money that your father has left you , you will pay by becoming my servant and my daughters lady in waiting."
So each day Cinderella would be put to work , cleaning and cooking and everything that her step mother could come up with to keep her busy.
As soon as she had almost finished one thing her step mother would have her doing another , or her step sisters would be calling on her to do the most simplest of things.
Just before Cinderella's , 21st birthday a visitor arrived at the house and stated he was on urgent business from King Louis and that he had come with a message.
"The King has requested that all single females of age 18 or older must present themselves to the king at a royal ball Whereby his Son Prince Sabastion of France shall choose a bride.
They may be accompanied by a chaperone or they may come alone."
Leaving the invitation with the step mother the visitor left .
Cinderella who was down in the cellar collecting potatoes for dinner that evening had heard the whole thing and she thought long and hard about how she would love to attend the ball but she knew it would be hopeless .
Latter that same day Cinderella after completing her list of chores asked with the softest voice if it might be possible for her to attend the ball.
The step mother , while drinking her tea spluttered , catching herself thinking she had heard wrong. "You go to the ball?, Dont make me laugh , what would the prince want with a poor wood cutters daughter much less an orphan."
Then the step mother with an evil grin on her face said" Very well Cinderella , If you can get all your chores done and find something to wear that wont embarrass us then you may attend the ball "
Cinderella worked hard and minded her manners and did anything and everything and although she had little time left in her day she would take what little time she had and sit up through the night sewing and embroidering the smallest stitches to make the gown that her own mother would be proud of.
The day of the ball arrived , and Cinderella was as busy as ever and morning turned to afternoon and afternoon turned into evening the time had come for all to go to the ball.
"step mother , all my chores are done , may I please go to the ball?" Cinderella asked in a quiet soft voice
"Do you have a gown to wear Cinderella?" asked the step mother
"Yes step Mother I do , I have been working on it for months just for the occasion"
"Very well, Go and change the coach will be here any minute"
As Cinderella rushed to get changed she heard her step mother laughing with her daughters " what would the future king of France want with wood cutters daughter?"
"She could be his chambermaid , she smells like the chamber pot anyway so no one would even know she was there." came Corina from behind her mother.
As Cinderella , came down the stairs in her gown , her step mother and sisters suddenly stopped their chatter as they saw her in a different light.
Cinderella was wearing a gown that looked like an angel had just come down from heaven.
Cinderella's gown would be the envy of the ball if the following had not happened
Corina took one look and with a step trod on the back of Cinderellas dress causing Cinderella to fall and her dress to rip" Pretty poor workmanship Cinderella, I guess with no dress you cant go to the ball after all."
To be continued.............
