Do you ever have to defrost your freezer?

Most freezers these days are self defrosting fortunately, but if you have an older style or a less expensive one you still have to defrost them or at least chip the ice away ocassionally. The little freezer I have in the office area, not really an office, but was at one time, really needed some maintenance. There was a huge build up of ice, and the door wasn't even closing properly leading to some of the problem. I spent a few hours last night taming it. At one point I even took a hammer to some of the bigger ice pieces. Now we are back in good shape again. I need to be careful not to overload that thing though. Did you know a bit of vaseline can help renew the seal on fridges and freezers? Trick I learned from a refrigerator repair man.

@snowy22315 I still have to defrost mine. I do it when I move or right before our holiday of Passover because we do not eat bread on that holiday. We eat unleavened bread. I never knew that about vaseline.

Yes, I do because I got a semi-automatic one. Should have bought a no defrost freezer when I had the chance.

Fortunately, ours is a newer one. The good thing about our apartment is that all of the appliances are relatively new, so I don't get stuck with unpleasant tasks such as supervising my husband defrosting the freezer. Yes, I actually have allowed him the "privilege" of that task in the past. I do more housework than he does, but he does do some of the tasks that I've not the patience and/or strength for.

Yes, most new things don't need it, this one though for some reason does although it is new too. I guess since I got it cheap, that was one of the reasons why. I only paid slightly over one hundred bucks for this thing, but it has been worth every penny.

@snowy22315 I've no idea what our next one will be. Since our next place will likely be a rental as well, so it will likely be a bit of the luck of the draw.

@wilsongoddard I would love to have a double sided one with the freezer drawer on the bottom. I couldn't get the fridge I really wanted when I bought this one, as it wouldn't fit into the space.

I do not, but this fridge freezer definitely needs to be replaced. It is costing me a fortune to run. But no chance of replacement

I think the water pressure tank problems might have been part of the reason for the huge electric bill last month. Hopefully, it is a little better this month just because we have used no AC or heat.

We have that when I was young. I was in charge of cleaning the ref after the ice melted. But while the ice was melting I remember being beside the ref since it was very cold there

I'm sure this sounds a bit crazy, but I actually rather enjoyed defrosting a freezer. The tremendous satisfaction when that final big chunk gives way I don't have one these days, but thanks for the little trip down memory lane

I'm using the new version now. I used to own a fridge like that. I even turn off the switch and did deep cleaning.

Don't remind me! I have an old one which works well but it's so iced up at the moment I keep putting off defrosting it.

I usually find it easy to break off some ice every now and then, but never fully defrost it. It didn't cost us a fortune, so it works for me. Now our little bar fridge, that is another story. The freezer, which is only about the size of a shoe box, freezes completely up. We don't keep anything in it, but every couple of years we will notice that the fridge is running alot and if you open up the door you'll see a block of ice. It usually takes a full day of sitting outside in the sun with the doors propped open to thaw. Its a pain.

This one is pretty small too. It is the size of a small fridge. It was a great purchase, because my other freezer is oddly configured due to the water tap and ice maker..you can't even fit a pizza box in it. This other one is flat and is good for things like that, although I have a tendency to overload it.

Most of the newer ones don't need that kind of treatment.
