Step mom has been having medical issues, very scary. She's 90 and has COPD. The smoke from the fires really aggravated her breathing, her oxygen machines weren't working at full efficiency, and she got pneumonia and some other things. She's been recovering, but she's been stubborn as anything at accepting help other than family. She doesn't want 24/7 help, says she doesn't need it. Maybe she doesn't now that she's on her way to recovery, but I tell you, it was scary. She fell twice, she lost her oxygen (fell out of her nose) twice, and she wasn't able to notice that she was on the wrong machine once. What would have happened if I (her son, my sister) weren't there when those things happened? So I had a heart to heart with her. Well, she's not going for the in home help even though she and dad have policies that will cover it. But I told her I was worried what would happen if she fell or got sick and couldn't get to a phone and Dad (cognitive impairment due to a stroke) didn't know what to do. So she did agree to getting them both on Life Alert. She has a friend who had a good experience with it. So that's a small relief anyway.

It is good that she agreed to it. She likely didn't want the 24/7 help, because she doesn't want to feel old. It is a lot different when it is one of you "kids" who give her a hand with things.

How could a 90 year old NOT feel old, but yeah, I get it. I'm just glad she at least got the Life Alert. Last year she was totally opposed to the idea.

@dawnald I forgot who it was that wrote about looking in the mirror and wondering who the old person was who was looking back at them. I often think of that, though.

@wilsongoddard I saw a version of that that made me laugh - "who is that old woman in the mirror and what did she do with my body?"

It's something. And if she ends up having to call them a lot, she may see the need for the 24/7 care...

That comes with a pendant that is worn around the neck and has a big "panic button" that connects to the company home base? My mom had one when she was still living on her own.

At the age of 90, that's quite a steadfastness that is rarely seen. My rustic grandmom was affected with cancer and she was resolute to die at her own bed, not in any hospital room.

If it weren't for her COPD, she would probably be really healthy. Other than being a former smoker she took really good care of herself.
