The 14 diyas on chaturdashi neutralises the darkness.

On the date of chaturdashi there is amavasya. While nature spells darkness Hindus by lighting the 14 diyas also called choddopradip neutralises the diyas. Whatever diyas are bought oil and cotton balls are used to light them. The diyas really make the atmosphere absolutely divine. Hindus celebrate the festival of lights.

Yes, we light fourteen diyas and eat fourteen types of leafy greens cooked into one preparation.
