A Common Sight

It is a common sight these days, but I remember when bra straps were never on view. It was considered to be common (in the sense of slovenly) to allow a hint of a strap to show. Two small gold safety pins were an essential part of a woman’s wardrobe. If a neckline was wide or a shoulder narrow and a bra strap revealed, then it would be pinned to the seam of the shoulder of the dress so that it was out of sight. Fashionable women dressed very discretly, a full length petticoat being required if a dress or blouse was slightly ‘see through’. Skirts well below the knees ensured that they were out of sight too! Although I welcome a freer approach to fashion I do feel that the pendulum has swung a little too far in that direction and resulted in a loss of dignity for women. Sometimes a little discretion would be welcome once more.

It's still not a norm here. But yes, I agree that more and more people are going for bold fashion these days and some do cross the line of decency. But then I can only state my personal views.

I am pleased that Indian Women know how to dress and they are very beautiful, smart and eye catchers without trying so hard.

@arunima25 that is a pity because traditional dress is so beautiful. I have always envied Indian women having such beautiful saris to wear.

@41CombedaleRoad Thank you for the compliments. But global influence is there in fashion in our country too. Traditional attires and fashion are overlooked by these influences.

Unfortunately showing the body is the trend nowadays. Sometimes even school teachers dress inappropriately and that's the worst

Teachers should know better than wear clothes that distract their students from their lessons.

@41combedaleroad Oh yes! None of us need to see anyone else’s undies. I’m so happy that it is no longer fashionable for young men to wear their jeans at half mast displaying all to everyone. I remembering my father saying discreetly to my mother in company “YSIS dear” and she disappeared to the bathroom. Only much later did I learn that those letters stood for Your Slip Is Showing.

How nice of your father. A real gentleman. I would rather not remember those young men with their half mast jeans. Even worse was the not so young men!

This doesn't seem to be a worldwide phenomenon. I can't remember the last time I noticed a bra strap.

It is all about culture and culture differs all over the world. In some parts of the world women are topless, in others men wear a Gstring and nothing else.
