The feeling of importance

Many of us like to feel important. Whenever we are made to feel small or second rate by others, we get hurt. The pain becomes more intense if it is inflicted by someone who really matters. If an enemy demeans us, it hurts less because it is almost expected of him. However, if it is a friend or a beloved, then we feel devastated when put down.

The 'feeling of importance' might not be the correct terminology in this case. That term comes from the VIP or very important person. What you probably mean is self-preservation. It's a basic instinct to preserve one's self especially from condescension or hurtful criticism. Here's the rule: If a friend criticizes you, he or she is envious. If an enemy criticizes you, he or she is telling the truth. So beware of friends, not enemies.

That is very true and why many say truth hurts but I find there is tactful ways to give someone constructive criticism. I mean that is what it should be about you actually care for someone and hope they do better or else just keep your mouth shut.

Oh that should be the attitude. However, the reality appears to be different.
