I’m not much on Bob Dylan as a singer (much like Willie Nelson); however, there is absolutely NO denying the incredible contributions he’s made to the music. I’ve been looking at my favorite covers of Dylan songs in this countdown. Here’s the positively 1st street top pick. #1: Only a Hobo - Johnson Mountain Boys As Steve Miller sang in “Space Cowboy,” bet you weren’t ready for THAT! Dylan’s look at the plight of the homeless (“a blanket of newspaper covered his head”) is given the bluegrass treatment, emphasized by the incredible lead vocals of Dudley Connell. When Connell won the male vocalist of the year award at IBMA in 2001, Laurie Lewis followed his speech by saying, “Dudley, you’re not only male vocalist of the year, you’re male vocalist of a lifetime.” Put a songwriter for the ages together with a vocalist for the ages, and the results are magic.
