Things to do, not fun things mostly

Well, last week my Stepmother, Jane Randall, passed away (not so) suddenly at the age of 90. My dad, who has cognitive impairment following a stroke, ran across the street to the neighbor's house. They came over, saw she was cold, and called 911. Nothing to be done. No idea what happened. She had end stage COPD and also heart issues. Possibly she became unmoored from her oxygen (which happened two days prior) or she had a heart attack. The police did an investigation when they were here, so I guess I can ask them. But anyway, now we need to figure out how to provide for Dad. He can't take care of himself, and there are lots of things that need to be done. My sister has already dug into the financials, and found out that she didn't make the house payment or pay the electric bill for the last 2 months. So she had to call them and let them know what was going on and get a grace period till the end of the month. Then, Jane bought a car literally 4 days before she died. But she didn't move the money for the deposit, so the check bounced. We want them to take the car back. And then there are numerous bank accounts including IRAs, savings, checking, etc. Can't do anything about the money until we get a death certificate. My sister needs to file a power of attorney. And then there are all the things in this house. Her things. His things. Things that were his and my mom's, etc. And she went on a tremendous spending spree in the last month, so we are figuring out what needs to be returned, what needs to be sent to people, etc. My sister is very worried about the money. Her pension will probably stop, and that was 2/3 of their income. And how much of the money is Dad's vs. her boys. Need a death certificate and a power of attorney to dig into all of that. Not a fun time.

Despite his disability, I've had more conversations with dad in the last couple of days than in years.

@dawnald that's good to hear, do you feel that Jane was trying to keep him away from you guys?

Oh dear. That is a lot, and not fun. Condolences and good luck with everything.

Thanks. Dad has gotten really talkative with her gone.

@dawnald Do you think she stifled him? And is he telling interesting stories?

@BarBaraPrz Not exactly sure. Two wives in a row who were really strong women, and his mother was the same. Yes, indeed he is.

I am so sorry you guys had to deal and are dealing with all of that. My sister-in-law had to do similar with my mother-in-law's estate after her passing. It was easier, because she'd been put on the bank accounts.

@dawnald Well, that may, or may not help.
