Why Do They Call 'those Half Sit-Ups' ''Crunches''?

Bing Rewards led me to a page about https://www.masterclass.com/articles/crunches-exercise-guide#what-are-crunches 'doing more crunches,' and I wondered why people gave that name to the exercise?
When I looked up the root of the word, the closest thing I found (when I saw that the word's actual root is 'the noise made when you chew crunchy food) is 'the fact that health-nuts are described as "crunchy" (due to their love of wholesome Crunchy Granola-bars).'
Do you know of any other reason those half sit-ups are called "crunches"?
