When I was a teen, my mother was the hostess for a group of spouses of the men that came to a conference. Mom had to do it because Dad was Assistant Executive Director and the Executive Director was a widower.
We spent 6 months figuring out where to go the 4 or 5 days the conference was going. Austin wasn't as large as it is now, and at that time it only had about 130 years of history.
We went to the French Legation, the O Henry museum, of course the Capitol and, since LBJ was president, the LBJ Ranch. Mom and I went to all the places, except the ranch, though we did drive by it.
I don't know where Mom hired the buses, or someone else arranged it, but we got everything organized. We got permission to drive up close to the LBJ Ranch house.
And it was at that point the organization fell through.
We were told that LBJ was in residence at the ranch so we wouldn't be able to go up close. Still, all the ladies from all over the country, climbed aboard one of the two buses. Mom was on the first one, I was on the second one.
We got past Johnson City and we were pulled over. Some guy - turned out to be Secret Service - climbed on the first bus.
We all sat there wondering what was going on. Then a second agent got on the first bus. Two more of them came back to our bus. They looked us over. I have no idea what he thought of me, but most of the ladies where nice, middle aged, well dressed ladies. One went to the back of the bus, the other stayed by the driver. He said something to the driver and even though I was in the front, I couldn't hear what he said.
Then the first bus took off. A black car got between the first bus and ours and it turned out there was another behind us. When the first bus turned off, I could see there was another black car in front of it. It turned out that we did get to drive up to the front of the house. I could've sworn I saw a curtain move, but probably not LBJ, probably another Secret Service guy.
When we got back to where we would turn onto the road, and see all the anti-war protesters, the Secret Service agents got off the buses and we headed back to Austin.
That was my first encounter with the Secret Service agent... Have you ever had an encounter like that?
I'll tell you about my second encounter sometime...

Nothing more terrifying than two busloads of sightseeing spouses...
