We had a power cut last night.

I was getting ready for bed last night. I was in the downstairs loo, and I'd cleaned my teeth and now I was sitting on the loo. Suddenly the light flickered and then went off! I was in the dark! I thought the bulb had gone. I had to finish off what I was doing in the dark! When I was finished I went out and switched the switch off, (the switch to the downstairs loo light is out in the back hall) and I noticed there was no light coming out of my room or the living room. I usually put my heater on to heat my room up, and it usually gives out an orange glow, but there was none. I went into my room to put my clothes in and the telly was off too. I realised there was a power cut. I went into the living room where Mum was asleep, and woke her up to tell her there was a power cut. Mum wondered if the rest of the street had got it. I felt my way to the kitchen and looked out of the window, and told my Mum that all the street lights were off, and there was a guy across the street in his front room with a torch, you could see it flickering. Mum fumbled in her bag for her torch and I felt my way to my bedroom to get my battery operated bed side lamp. I brought it in to the living room so my Mum could see what she was doing. Mum said why don't you put your uplighter on, because that's battery operated too. So I went over to the other side of the room by the window where my battery operated uplighter was and switched it on. It didn't give out much light, it was mainly directed at the chair I usually sit in, but at least it gave out some light. I told my Mum to switch my uplighter off when the electric came back on, and I was going to bed now. I wouldn't be able to watch Doctor Who before I went to bed because of the power cut. I went to bed and went to sleep. I woke up needing the toilet at about 1:05am, and the electric was back on. So I went to the loo and when I came back I took my Doctor Who DVD out of the DVD player and put a Andre Rieu CD on and went back to sleep. This morning when I got up I reset the microwave clock because it went off due to the power cut. But the oven clock is not working. We cannot do anything to it. It's flashing and there's a bell up the corner meaning the oven fan isn't working and you can't use the oven until it's fixed and the clocks reset. But nothing's working, we push the right buttons but nothing happens. I wanted to do a vegan sausage roll for lunch in the oven today but if we can't do anything about the oven clock I'm not going to be able to! How's everything your end?

Thank you very much. We still can't do anything about the oven clock. I've had corn cakes with vegan Philadelphia cream cheese on, and carrots sticks with humous dip for lunch instead of the vegan sausage rolls. Looks like we're going to have to get a man in to sort the oven.

In winter season we usually don't have problems with power. In summer you can expect the power cuts any time. Everything is fine at my end.

I'm glad to hear it. We have no idea why the power went off.

Thank you very much. It wasn't off for very long but I didn't get to watch Doctor Who. I'm watching what I would have watched last night right now, in fact I'm listening to a commentary.

@sharonelton Oh okay I know what you mean now Sharon, I have seen those..very handy. You know do you have a smartphone? My phone has the most amazing flashlight built in..if the power goes out, as long as my phone is handy, I can use that.

@RebeccasFarm I don't have a smartphone but I do have a non-smartphone and it does have a light on it! I never thought of that! I could have used that.

An uplighter is a lamp that stands on its own and usually has a light that faces up. My lamp has a swivel head so that you can direct the light where you want it.

Haven't had any power cuts for ages. When I was growing up we used to have one practically as soon as there was a clap of thunder, and we always had candles and matches in strategic places.

Yes, we did too. I remember the days when we used to light candles when there was a power cut. These days we use torches.

I'm sorry the power was out when you were in the bathroom. It's hard to see in the dark. I'm glad you had a battery-operated light. I'm sorry that when it came on your oven still didn't work and you couldn't fix the clock. I hope you can get it fixed soon.

@sharonelton I hope he can. Our power went out a few days ago for a few minutes. I woke in the middle of the night to find my clock blinking. I reset it and went back to sleep.

@just4him I hope so too. That's the trouble with power cuts, they send your electrics wonky!

Oh you're telling me! I was fumbling about in the dark! We've got a man coming tomorrow to look at the cooker. We'll see if he can do anything with it.
