Inspirational Speech

If one wants to make lasting change, one must be willing to go against the norms and status quo. I spent yesterday rereading Letter From Birmingham Jail which contains letters that Dr. King wrote chronicling his imprisonment in Birmingham Alabama in 1963 during the height of the Civil Rights movement. Despite his own imprisonment, Dr. King implored his colleagues to continue their peaceful and nonviolent tactics while advocating for justice and equality for all. King’s audience for his letter were the Caucasian religious and community leaders. In his letter, Dr. King implored the leaders to join him in advocating for justice and equality for all and not just a select few. In addition, Dr. King inspired many with his famous I Have A Dream speech which he delivered on the steps of the Lincoln memorial in Washington DC during the March On Washington on August 28, 1963. Despite the injustice of inequality and segregation that was the status quo in the United States at the time of Dr. King’s speech, he continued to hold fast to his conviction of justice, inclusion and equality for all, regardless of one’s race, religion or ethnicity.

And, thanks to him, we've taken several steps forward. However, little has changed. We have laws to "protect" race and such, and that might seem like a step in the right direction, but then on the flip side. We still have blacks and whites killing each other. We still see blacks as the miniority, because there are still far more whites. The list goes on. One step forward, two steps back.
