Welcome to the most obvious band on the countdown of favorites by Shel Silverstein. If I repeated artists half of these would probably boil down to either this band or Bobby Bare. (Bare introduced me officially to Silverstein’s music….but more on that when I get to the Bobby Bare song.) So here’s today’s tune.
#9: I Got Stoned and I Missed It - Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show
This was NOT included at the insistence of anyone on myLot who starts the day with coughee and holding the door open for his cats.
“Sylvia’s Mother.” “The Cover of the Rolling Stone.” “Freaking at the Freaker’s Ball.” Gee, how do you even start to pick from a band whose first four albums were NOTHING but Silverstein songs?
You go with the one that is so contrary to the notion of Silverstein being honored on a postage stamp for a children’s book, that’s what you do!
Here’s a little trivia for you: Silverstein hated being pigeonholed as a children’s book author. Guess that shows in some of the songs he wrote, huh?
Another interesting piece of trivia: this was also covered in country music, by Jim Stafford. He was riding high (pardon the pun) on the success of his cover of Don Bowman’s “Wildwood Weed” in 1974 and thought he’d continue the trend.
