can anyone explain why this happens?, in word

ive never noticed it before, but the past month or so whenever i use word 2003 and 2007 and some other programs, your writing and you want to press return for a new line, but it creates a big gap, where as when you hold shift and press return you get the line directly underneath where you want to be, anyone know why this might be?
