I am always amazed at how many languages are spoken in the world. I just learned of another - one of 23 (!!!) recognized official languages in India. I understand over 2.5 million people speak it - but many also speak another of the major languages of the country. This language is one of 1055 for which publications are available - just recently, an up to date translation of the book of Matthew was produced. Do you speak this language? You might like to check it out .

I don't know, in fact, I'm fairly sure (perhaps someone could enlighten me) that the 23 'official' languages is just some of the many - including dialects - incredible variety of human communication!

The best way to learn language to me is to immerse yourself with the people. I do not speak that language, but I know my native language and also a smattering of my Mother and Father tongue of their countries.

I have many Konkani speaking friends. It's a sweet language. Would have learnt it but I have nobody to speak this language with where I live.

I hadn't thought about how many languages there are. How many would there be if we counted all, even the unrecognised

The website has translations into 'only' 1055 languages, even though its the most translated site on the web - there are still many more out there. I see that according to some sources, the number of languages is over 7100!! I find it interesting that people who are speakers of languages such as Konkani, a tongue spoken by a relatively few people, often speak one of the other languages of their country - which is a great advantage.

@sulynsi I wonder if it includes those languages that are only spoken by a few thousand people, as the culture is taken over by the larger one

Wow, 23 languages in India. I wonder if there are similarities so that people can mostly understand some of the others

I understand there are countries in Africa with even more official languages than India. It shouldn't really be a big surprise considering how large the continent of Africa is and how hard to travel in the continent it can still be. In the Americas, among Native American linguistic groups, related languages aren't mutually understandable. So, even if you spoke and understood one language wouldn't mean you would understand a language in the same family group.

that's amazing. I hear there are lots of languages being lost too. I was watching a Big Brother season from your country that had a Native of your country that speaks one that is dying out.
