My Mum's toilet seat.

My Mum sometimes has trouble getting up off the toilet. Upstairs she has one of those things with arms on that fit round your toilet so that you can push yourself up with the arms if you can't get off the seat. But one of those wouldn't fit around the downstairs loo because on one side of the toilet there is a wall with a window and on the other side is the washing machine, and they are both too close to the toilet. So, what happened was Mum's friend Dawn gave one of those raised toilet seats that you attatch to your toilet bowl to my Mum's friend Francis to give to my Mum. Francis brought it round just as my Mum and step-dad were going out to the luncheon club on Thursday. She saw them about to drive off and they stopped to chat to her before they went. When they'd driven off she rang the bell so I answered and she said she had the raised toilet seat and did I want her to fit it now. So I said, yes, and she went and attatched the raised toilet seat onto our toilet bowl. She explained what she was doing, and once it was on she decided it could really do with being a little bit further forward, so that it was flush with the front of the toilet bowl, so she adjusted it accordingly so that it was in the perfect position, and screwed it secure with plastic screw things at the sides. I told her my Mum had been having trouble getting off the loo only the previous night. She told me to tell my Mum she should use the raised toilet at least 5 times before she decides if she wants to keep it. When my Mum got back from the luncheon club she tried it out and she loved it. It was much easier for her to get off the toilet with it on. That night she wanted to open the washing machine door. Usually when she wants to open the washing machine door, she has to open the toilet lid and seat to do so because they get in the way. Well, of course, with this raised toilet seat attached, it got in the way of the washing machine door and it wouldn't open with it attached. So my Mum tried to lift it up, lid and seat, like she usually does with the normal toilet seat. But this one was screwed on at the sides and lifting it up loosened the screws and the toilet seat shifted. So then when the washing machine door was closed again my Mum tried to get the seat back into its original position, but she couldn't! So, when I wanted to go to the toilet I saw that the raised toilet seat had been moved out of its perfect position, and I tried to put it back in the right position, but I couldn't. I didn't want to sit on it as it was because the screws weren't fixed tight and so the seat would shift, so I took the seat off altogether. Later on I went to the toilet again, and once again I tried to get the raised seat on in the right position but I just couldn't do it. Once or twice I thought I had it but then I didn't know which way the screws went and I ended up loosening them instead of tightening them, so eventually I gave up and left the raised seat on the floor. The following morning I said to my Mum, you moved the toilet seat, didn't you, and that's when she told me about wanting to open the washing machine door. I guess we might have to phone Francis and ask her to re-attatch it, but then Mum will still want to move it when she wants to open the washing machine door! And then the same thing will happen again. That is, of course, if my Mum actually wants it re-attatching, because since then she's managed to get off the toilet seat fine!

@sharonelton I wish I had a suggestion; but I don't know how to solve your problem. Good luck.

Yes, we do. I don't know how we are going to manage it. Francis is the only one who can put the raised toilet seat on properly and we can't be phoning her every time we want to use the washing machine to come and put the raised toilet seat back properly afterwards!

@LindaOHio That's OK. There is only one thing we could do and that is push the washing machine back, and it's very heavy so we'd need a strong man to do it. My step-dad wouldn't want to. Also there are cables behind it so we'd have to make sure to avoid the cables.

Well, it sure sounded like a good idea.

It sounded like a good idea, yes, but not really practical when you can't open the washing machine door!

Sometimes things that should be simple turn out to be anything but! I hope you find a way to use both the toilet and the washing machine comfortably.

Thank you very much. You are so right! I don't know how were going to be able to use the raised toilet seat and manage to open the washing machine door. For now the raised toilet seat remains on the floor of the downstairs loo.

@sharonelton I wonder if there is space for you to also raise the washing nachine up? If you could put it on a platform of some concrete blocks or something, that might work.

@Fleura Well, no, not really, because we have our tumble dryer on top of our washing machine!
