Success Again?

May 1, 2022 1:37pm CST
You have worked hard all your life in your chosen profession. You've mastered and managed to be successful in whatever field you have chosen for yourself. Have you ever felt the need to be successful again in another field? Or do you say, been there done that? I have succeeded. Living good, no need to do this again?

At 15, I got a job as a housekeeper at a hotel near me. I worked my way up and eventually became the Banquet Manager. The hotel was sold and I found myself out of a job. I went to work at a heating and air conditioning company as a helper that removed old furnaces and delivered supplies on site. I eventually became a truck driver with my own crew. I advanced to crane operator after a year. All the while, I was going to school to be a HVAC installer. The union adopted a two-tiered pay scale and as an installer, I was making less than I did as a crane operator. I then applied for a maintenance position with the school district. I advanced to a Lead Supervisor position after 11 years. My wife became disabled and after a year, I moved to a private maintenance company. Within a year, I was in charge of 18 properties. The maintenance company folded after a few years and I was again out of a job. I went to work for a fire and water damage mitigation company. I took classes and became a technician. It was hard and dirty work. One day, I went to a friend's business and he said that he'd hire me as a flooring specialist. I jumped at the offer and found it hectic but fun. I earned awards for top sales my first three months. On a hectic day, one of my installers hurt his back. I had promised the customer that work would be completed that week. The old carpet was still on the floor and no one was able to get on site to remove it. I found another installer but they didn't have time to remove the old carpet and padding. I took the afternoon and went to the site to remove it myself. Half way through the task, I was injured by a carpet staple that ricochet and struck me in my left eye. It struck the lens and tore the lens capsule. I was born blind in my right eye. After 12 procedures, I regained sight in the eye. This took 6 years. I went back to work at a home improvement store in sales part-time. In six months, I was promoted to a flooring specialist and instructor for the flooring clinics held every other Saturday. I was hurt one day at work and had trouble standing on my feet for long periods of time. I was unable to return to that job. I then started my own company and was relatively successful but limited vision and a broken down body caused me to retire early. I settled in at home as a caregiver for my wife. I still do odd jobs but I'm picky about what I'll do. I guess I think of my life as a successful failure. Every time I had to start over, my goal was to advance to the highest level possible.

@RebeccasFarm Thank you. I look back and feel all those failures at times but then look around me and those failures eventually brought me success in a home that's paid for and a comfortable retirement. I have zero debt and an income that will carry me to an age where I can officially retire and collect SS. I am a year and a half away.

Yes I do think of it. Though I am at retiring age, I sometimes think to try another profession. I was in licensed hairdressing. It was fun. Why are you thinking of doing something?

I have worked in home health for several years. Worked in private duty. I worked for a non-profit organization. Had a cleaning business for a couple of years. Have been back to school. Certification in Grant writing and administration. Sold handbags for a few years from my home. Loved doing that. Worked in the family business. My brother owns an RV Camp Ground. I am in my second act so to speak. I love to write. Last year I decided to try my hand at writing. I found this website called Medium.com. Great site if you are experienced in anything. You have a built-in audience of millions of writers and readers. I write to inspire. They also pay if anyone is interested. Writing is my thing. I am taking classes to learn the business of freelance writing. Being able to stay home and keep my brain occupied is my goal now. I never want to stop learning. If you are interested in doing something with writing maybe we can brainstorm some ideas.

I am proud of what I've done and what I have become. That's the most important thing for me.

I have been a successful psychologist for years. Now I am trying to learn jazz music well enough to play it in front of people. See my latest post. I don't want to ever stop "growing."

@beesure11 I did try something else after burned out with something I was doing for about 11 years and did not succeed in it so now in between things and have no clue what I want to do next. I do like working online. I keep thinking of what do I want to do with my life and cannot come up with anything.
