What would the Marathon Man say today?

Do you know the Dustin Hoffman movie "Marathon Man?" I remember watching it many, many years ago. The most memorable line from the movie was, "Is it safe?"
Dustin Hoffman's character has no idea what Laurence Olivier's character is asking him about?
Today, a lot of us are asking, "Is it safe?"
Is it safe to send our kids to school? Is it safe to go grocery shopping? Is it safe to go to church? Is it safe to attend a funeral? Is it safe to go to Walmart? Is it safe to visit a doctor's office?
The answer, despite all that's happened, based on statistical probability is that yes it is safe. Does knowing that the odds are ever in your favor make you feel safer?
Here is a link to the scene from Marathon Man. If you are squeamish or don't like the dentist, I recommend you don't watch it.

We old farts have been through this before. According to Time Magazine, there were over 2,500 bombings between 1971 and 1972. IN AMERICA.
As for “is it safe”….
I didn’t reject college because of the University of Texas.
I didn’t stop driving on the interstate because of the DC snipers.
I didn’t stop going to concerts because of Las Vegas, Paris, or the Borderline Bar.
I didn’t stop eating out because of San Ysidro or Luby’s.
I didn’t stop going to worship services because of Sutherland Springs Baptist church, Tree of Life synagogue, Emmanuel AME church, or Sikh Temple of Wisconsin.
The worst drunk driving accident in American history happened about 50 miles from my house in 1988, but that didn’t stop me from driving. (In fact, I drive past the sign indicating where the wreck happened quite frequently on my way to or from Cincinnati.)
As Jimmy Buffett sang in a song, I’d rather die while I’m living.

These days nothing seems safe and you are taking your life in your hands every time you go out but life must go on and we have to adjust to the new way of life.

With all that happening around...the pandemic, war, attacks, natural calamities, gin shots... nothing seems safe. No place is safe. But then one cannot stay like a hermit crab.
