Getting solar panels installed.

One of the things we've been wanting, since buying the house, is solar pannals. The time has come and we found out enough to pull the trigger. Our house is getting solar. The installers rang the bell somewhere around eight this morning and have been here ever since. We'll lose power for about half an hour, when they're ready to finish up, but so far everything looks good.

the house im in has solar panels on the roof. so far, the electric bill is under $20 a month, even in the 100*+ summer months. i think this is the 3rd year with them.

Yeah, we were told ours would go down to about ten bucks/month.

I am planning to get a solar unit, it will be nice here because of the abundance of sunlight.

That would be exciting. Having solar power was something I wanted since I was in my twenties but I rather doubt we'd ever be able to afford getting it now so close to retirement.

I would strongly consider looking into it. My husband is due to retire in October. And, we took the plunge.

@MarshaMusselman Sure. We are paying a total of 36,200 but the payments are in 150 dollar installments. The company we went with paid all the up-front costs. Permits, inspections, install, we are literally paying for the panels and battery themselves. It will virtually eliminate our power bill. We'll only pay the cost to have the power meter. Plus once the equipment is paid off, we owe nothing.

@kaylachan do you mind sharing how much it cost you. I realize there are different types and different companies out there.

We bought a house five years ago, and paid it off this past December.

We looked into that and then talked to the other halfs cousin who works for the electric department. The solar panels aren't worth it in the long run.

@kaylachan If you think its worth it for you then go for it. We've done our research and even talked to the installers that say it's not worth it.

If you get enough sunlight, it would be a worth investment. Would save you lot on electricity bills and is definitely an environment friendly step. More and more people are going for solar panel here too.

@arunima25 I completely agree. Solar was something my husband I wanted and talked about fore five years. We needed to make sure we were doing the best thing for our home.

@kaylachan Is it that the panels have to be quite big to generate electrictiy?

Why loose power for half an hour? Will the electric connection be stripped?

In order to safely connect the solar to the house, it needs to be connected to the main breaker. For that to happen, power needs to be turned off so the eletrition doesn't get shocked by live wires.

@aninditasen Yes. FPL will still take over at night. Battery back up only occurs when the grid goes down and the sun isn't shining.

That's terrific! Some commercials I see with testimonials, they love it and some have electric cars, so they like not having to pay for gas & get powered up at home!

Yep. We have a gas-powered van, but the solar is the first start. By the time we need a new van, we may have no choice but to go electric. Who knows what's on the market these days?
