This is a true story. Is it a bad or good story? Why?

Once upon a time in the hinterlands of Kalinga. there was a small village called Taloctoc. The people led simple lives with everything they needed in life without spending a cent. Fresh vegetables were grown in their backyards and rice was thriving in the ricefields. Amidst the forest, all kinds of fruits abound, some naturally grown and some cultivated. Water was not a problem because just a few steps from the village, there was a snaking river surrounding it where the folks dug wells for drinking water. The river is rich with fish and all sorts of water foods that one can go on a picnic all day long. Everyone bathed in the nude and no one sees any malice in it. The lamp oils were enough to light up their homes during the night time and firewood has never been a problem. During sickness, the old folks have discovered natural medicines from the vegetation around them that made people more resistant to infections and naturally immunized. There were no crimes, no thieves, although all houses were never locked. Life was simple and wonderful. Then came the missionaries, who wanted to "bring salvation" to the villagers. They trekked the 2-hour hike from town, so it was only respectful to give them an audience. Slowly, so-called "civilization" was introduced. Slippers, umbrellas, and underwear were introduced. People became conscious without them. Men and women no longer bathed in the nude but have to wear undies instead, before doing so. Slippers and umbrellas became a must for the new generation. Thievery and other crimes started thriving. Some youth traveled to town to get an education. Life has changed from a simply wonderful life to a more complicated one. I'm somewhat sad to have witnessed this myself, and I'm wondering if you think this is a sad or happy story. What are your thoughts on this? Is it a sad or happy story? Why do you say so? The image credit is from Taloctoc Elementary School Facebook. The image is the view of Taloctoc atop the mountain. Notice how the river snakes its way around the village, and how the surrounding mountains are like sentinels guarding the village. There were no roads. You have to hike to get there.

Well it was okay until people started getting greedy and committing crimes. Sometimes I do wonder if the world was a lot better when it wasn't too commercial.

I believe it was. Commercialization brought on the greediness and everything else. It imposed this impossible standard (still does) on people who just don’t have the means to follow it. It’s highly exclusive.

@Greencindere This is very accurate. These missionaries could be well intending but they have introduced a lot of new needs which destroyed a community and a culture.

Very sad to me. Too bad they did not chase those visitors off.
