The Shiv Linga is a symbol of the Universe which means a way to the beyond which we all want to go after death. The two parts of Shiv Linga which are the Ling and the Panapattam(betel leaf), represents the universal self in his awakened aspect; being in union with his dynamic energy (the Shakti or Parvati). This combination is also interpreted as worship of reproduction that's essential to run the Universe. The Shiv Ling also represents the pineal gland at the center of the brain. It's also the cosmic from of fire, the embodiment of cosmic energy. The coloum of fire ensembles the entire Universe. Shiv Linga is the symbol of divine knowledge. Though all the other idols are worshipped in human form, Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of Shiv Linga. The name Shiv means " One who offers Mangalam(unending good) which is obtained through divine knowledge. Today is the last Monday of Shavan and may Lord Shiv bestow us divine knowledge.

@aninditasen This is so wonderful. I can relate to you. I remember my Irish Granny telling us also of Celtic legends in Ireland. It is wonderful to know and remember the gifts we have been given by our ancestors. Yes you are living still and many more great years to you and RIP your beloved Husband.

@RebeccasFarm I wouldn't have allowed him if I knew he was doing such a prayer. I am left alone today and have become vulnerable to thugs and loopy people.

I loved to listen to these stories and facts when my father related stories of Lord Shiva and Kali to me. My devotion for them grew and I still pray to them. My husband burnt lamps for my long life in the Kali mandir (which he confided to my elder son)and he won. I am living today and he has left for his heavenly abode.

@Ronrybs There aren't any guides for Indian scriptures. You can get English versions of these religious scriptures. Actually these stories are written in the vedas and puranas.

It's no belief but is related to the working of the planets in the Universe and its relation to our life pattern.
