Bird conservation volunteer project at the zoo

Last week, I received an email from my zoo's volunteer coordinator about a special volunteer project on bird conservation near the downtown area this fall. I emailed the contact to find out more information about it and heard back from her. It's a songbird conservation project to find out which areas are concerned for bird collisions with windows. It sounded interesting to do something fun and educational. Little did I know, it would be for an hour around sunrise at 5:30-6:30 AM. That was way too early for me. But she said I could join in later in the season when the temperatures would be warmer and the sun would rise earlier. So I called my bus company to find out, if they operated in earlier hours: the main one starts at 6 AM, the one I use for volunteering on weekends and after-hours, even earlier at 5 AM. So at least this is good to know as I forward her this information over to her. Then I sent her my availability schedule and selected Wednesdays and Saturdays for my days. I don't know what my schedule would be like this fall, and if I hopefully have my work adjustment trial period for two weeks. If so, I would let her know and do it only on Saturdays, even if it might be on the same day I plan to volunteer for a nightly special event at the zoo. I looked up what the fall sunrise schedule when be starting. It's at 9/12/22 around 7 AM. That works for me since the new schedule would be pushed to 6:30-7:30 AM. I let her know in the same email. I probably wake up around 5:45 AM depending what time my pick-up time would be for the bus when the schedule would be released. I know for sure, when I come home on those mornings, I'll be sleeping in for at least a half-hour to an hour. And I would going to bed earlier on those two nights a week. Earlier this week, I received an email from her. A lot of people have signed up and were interested on doing this volunteering opportunity. And while they would work on finalizing the logistics for the schedule, instead of starting next week, it would be three weeks from her, which worked well for me. I'll be joining them the week after 9/1/22. I'll be sure to tell you about my birding adventures from time to time. Have anyone birded or bird-watched before? I'll check in tomorrow after church. Hope you have a good evening since I have a special event tonight at the zoo.

This will be something you will really enjoy doing. Volunteering to help with the songbirds, very interesting and educational, too!

I hope so Kharla. Yes indeed. I'll be a rookie birder, I think.

@kobesbuddy Aww Kharla. Yes indeed. Maybe I'll get lucky to snap a photo or two while I'll do some birding next month and bring my guide book. And post one here for you.

I hope so too. I prefer late morning than early to bird-watch for songbirds.

@RubyHawk Me neither. I've seen a bunch of birds fly to the top of a fence at the house next to my apartment. Maybe a half-dozen robins. I saw a cardinal and a blue jay. I've seen different ones at the zoo too. I have time to study birding.

I can't see well enough to, but I do like it when my husband tells me about the birds that come to our yard.

Yeah it does. Other than the birds at the zoo's aviary and what I see around my neighborhood, this is a new adventure to commune with nature.
