You know America's politics run mostly on a two-party system---currently known as Democrats & Republicans. (In my State, I think you can also register as Libertarian; if you don't register as Independent/No-Party.) And your party is important because (at least in my State) you can only vote in the Primaries of the party you register-with (although I think my State's Democratic Party also lets Libertarians & Ind./NPs vote in their Primaries).
