ELECTRONICS 101: How Much Extra Energy does Each Program Use?

I'm turning this desktop-computer on and using it most of the day. I may want to know 'how much energy that uses compared to the lamp my roommate leaves on all day and all night,' but that's not my question. My question is--running my computer--am I using MORE energy if I have a few browsers open (with a few tags on each), or would it "save energy" if I closed each browser and reloaded it every time I want to return to a website I was using before?

It's kind of a nightlight---40 watts, I think.

Not enough to make any type of noticeable difference, equate it to "Does my TV use more electricity if I turn the volume up". Actually, closing/opening puts more 'strain' on the program than just leaving them open if you want to consider the billionth of a watt it might use.

due to living with off grid power at times I can tell you a computer doesnt actually use very much, a tv uses more and fridges and freezers use a lot more .....no idea about a lamp, also not a lot I guess
