A tribute to my teachers on 'Teacher's day"

Among all my teachers in college I will always have a special liking for my Chemistry teacher who instilled confidence in me. We used to call her 'Rashmi Madam'. I was a 2nd year science student in Women's College, Sambalpur, Odisha. As I was fluent in English, my English lecturer asked me to participate in the inter- college debate competition to be held at the University level. I was not very apprehensive but decided to represent my college. Another college mate of mine was also selected to take part in the debate competition on " Cooperative Movement ". Both of us were accompanied to the University by two lecturers Rashmi Madam and Rajalakshmi Madam. The moment I entered the senate hall, Rajalakshmi madam pointed out to a young man sitting on the desk chewing beetal leaf and said, " That boy has been taking the first prize for the last three years ". This fellow competitor of mine happened to be a final year medical student. It was not his seniority that frightened me but his girth and confidence with which he wan enquiring about the gradation of marks. I ran to Rashmi Madam and said that I wanted to go back home. She said that I was not doing anything like that but face the audience with courage. My turn came, I spoke, a few students from other colleges complimented me which I did not pay heed to as I was sure that I stood nowhere compared to the winner of the previous years. We returned home. My surprise and happiness blew over the sky when Rashmi Madam came running to the college library (wherever I was jotting down some notes) and congratulated me for getting the first prize and being selected for the national debate competition. Today I look back with nostalgia at my wonderful teacher whose sweet persuasion boosted up my confidence and pushed me to the path of success.

In our days we didn't have to go for tuition once we entered the college. Our teachers taught very well.
