It works!

Took me a little bit to figure out which piece went where, but the lamp I bought today is all together, and it works! 
I guess I'll stick the two lamps--one I bought at the Good Will (that didn't work), and the other I found discarded by a dumpster here in the complex--back out near a dumpster. Sometimes the maintenance guys around here pick things up to fix up and use themselves.
Now I have a good place to read when it starts to get dark out--and more comfortable than sitting at my catch-all table.

That looks adjustable, so it should be perfect for cross-stitching... aim one at the chart, aim another on your work.
