The Real Winner

Opinions as to the benefits of the lottery are varied. Whether in favor or in opposition, most are passionate about their views and they have a plethora of resources to support their views.
One thing, I think all can agree on is that the real winner is the government. By the time they get through taking their cut in taxes, the purchaser of the ticket gets just a fraction of his/her winnings. For example, recently an Illinois man won the $1.28 Billion Georgia lottery. By the time the federal government and both state governments got through, he ended up with $433.7 million. Now I know that is a lot of money and any of us would be grateful for that. But when one considers that the government took $846.3 million (about half of this man's winnings), it is not hard to see the government as more than a mafia entity.
The worst part is we don't even have a say in how the money is spent. That is bureaucracy for you.
