Mahalaya has special significance, especially for Bengalis, as this day marks the beginning of Durga puja celebration in West Bengal and now all over India in the form of Navaratri which starts from tomorrow. The day marks the arrival of Goddess Durga to Earth from Kailash parvat with her Devine powers. These Devine powers were bestowed on her by Bhrama, Vishnu and Maheswar to wipe out the violent demons from Earth and heaven, especially Mahisasur who had an envil design on Goddess Durga.
The Lord's in heaven provided Goddess Durga with all their Devine weapons to fight the demons.
Indra gave her - Vajra/ thunderbolt, Varina or Sun God offered his - conch, Agni dev- his missile/ spear, Vayu- his bow and arrows, Vishwakarma- his axe and armour, Lord Shiva- his trishul/trident, Vishnu- his Sudarshan Chakra, Brahma- his Kamandalam of holy water and wisdom. Last of all Yamraj, the God of death offered his sword and the Lord of mountains gave her his Lion.
The Goddess comes this year riding an elephant with all her Devine strength and weapons to wipe all our sorrows and bring stability and prosperity in our lives. May the Goddess bless all of us peace, health and prosperity.

This is written in the Puranas, an old Hindu religious book and people worship Goddess Durga for 10 long days.
