Today is the last day of Durga puja and in most parts of India it's referring to as Dusshera and we Bengalis call this day Bijoya Dashami which means victory on the 10th day by Goddess Durga on the 10th day over evil by killing Mahishasur who was torturing the men on earth. This day also celebrated as Ram's victory over Ravana. Today the effigy of Ravana is burnt all over India to signify Ram's victory and his return to Ayodhaya with Sita. Married women of Bengal put vermillion on each other's head or forehead as a mark of long Married life together. This vermillion is a symbol of Ram's blessings to Ravanas wife Mandodhari that Ravanas funeral pyre will never stop burning and so she can have her vermillion on her head forever. As according to Hindu mythology a woman wipes out her vermillion only after her husband's pyre gets completely burnt to ashes. It's said that Ravana's funeral pyre is still burning in Sri Lanka. These 10 days our city was full of beautiful pandals with the idol of Goddess Durga in it along with other decoration. Though I didn't go pandal hopping but enjoyed viewing them in the local news or while going out to the market. Waiting for the Laxmi puja now, another celebration
