In Diwali the Hindus light 14 diyas in the there houses or 14 candles. Now the number fourteen is very significant. The reason is that the light is offered to fourteen forefathers who have left the world and take the blessings to drive away evil spirits. This day of Diwali is considered dark as no moonlight is there so the additional light lightens the atmosphere. The mud plate is decorated with 14 diyas and the idols of Goddess Laxmi and Ganesha or Laxmi and Vishnu are engraved.

The fourteen diyas are actually asking blessings from the 14 generation that has left us to help those lonely spirits who have no one to pray for them to reach heaven.
