Helping neighbors events

I am married to my husband for only 2 years. Living with my husband, I realize that the neighbors here have a different culture from where I lived before. People here will come to your house asking you to help with the preparation of their event (Such as weddings, birthdays, etc). Vice versa. Honestly, First I was shocked. My mother never came to the neighbors to ask for help when holding any event. She only asked for help from her closest relatives. So when my neighbor asked me for help, I was a little confused, who was her really? I asked my husband, why should I help her with their event? I know I sound selfish now That was my experience of culture shock when I moved to live with my husband Have you ever experienced culture shock?
