"Why I Traveled"

United States

Someone on here thought I should make this a separate post after she asked why I traveled. I'm a curious person, and a question I'd ask you would be, "Why not?".. So many reasons, but I don't think there's one in particular... I'm a musician, so I want to play with musicians from all over the world, especially different kinds of music. Part of it is to prove myself I can jam with anyone. Mainz, Bocholt, Konstanz - where I visited this girl who was a foreign exchange student, six years after we graduated high school. We went to Basel, Switzerland for a day, too. I have been to Cologne, where I met a friend in Texas during a long 15,000 mile road trip across the US, where I traveled through 28 states in my 20s. A fellow musician with a witty sense of humor, we became fast friends, so when he was living in Amsterdam, we hung out a few times, and then after going to Greece and Hungary for about 2 months altogether, I went to Cologne for two weeks, staying mostly in a hostel near his place, and a few nights at his apartment. I still remember the street -- Venlostrasse (I have actually been to Venlo, NL). Another interesting part of travel is where I usually stay - backpacking hostels. There might be 200-300 people from over a hundred countries, and it's nice to compare what they think about the host country. Couchsurfing was a good community (until the pandemic) to talk with locals, expatriates, backpackers, for advice on how to stay, where to go, finding work, finding people. One thing no one ever admitted was finding love. It wasn't a reason for going, but I thought it could be a by-product, just like making friends. The first question everyone asks each other during introduction is why... Only one Italian woman (very shy, spoke little English) eventually told me, maybe as a result of smoking marijuana, but she said "I want to go to school, become a chef.... <paused> and maybe start a family?" - she said it so shyly, while shrugging her shoulders, as if she wasn't sure, but I think she was, and perhaps didn't want to be too vulnerable. I never heard anyone say this, but I lost the wonder for travel when the phones took over, eliminating conversation and cultural exchange, so I haven't even left my state in the last five years, and spend a lot of time online, where I can communicate to more people without all the money and travel.

I'm glad you like to travel. I'd like to aswell, but not abroad. Only inside my own country. But I don't drive and I don't like public transport. I'd need someone to drive me round and I don't have anyone to do that anymore! I used to, but he wrote off his car and that was the end of that. My step-dad doesn't like driving far these days.

I don't anymore. I'm not doing all that traveling just to see people stare at their phone in another country! It's sooo expensive. I also stopped driving in my late 30s (during the pandemic) after I had some problem (to add to many other ones) and thought to myself, "I can order my groceries like my sister.. I never go anywhere anymore". But, I guess I got it out of my system. I sometimes imagine it, and that will have to do :)

@PinkFloydFan Oh, I see. Well, maybe you'll travel again in the future. Who knows?

Good for you for seeing many places throughout the world during the good days. Not so much fun these days I wouldn't think. Not for me anyway. Nice to read about the places you enjoyed. I am partial to staying home as well.

@CarolDM If there was a good reason, the right situation, sure, but otherwise, I think I'll stay home and avoid drama.

I haven't left my state in six years, when I went to California to see Mort Sahl again. I don't think I've left my house in a month.

Travelling widens our horizon. I have been to some of the places you mentioned. Well, I live in Germany and Bocholt is at the boarder in The Netherlands. I have worked there in Bocholt for a few years.

@PinkFloydFan Some Dutch people who live near the border come to Germany for grocery shopping. They said we have cheaper food and clothes here in Germany. Maybe you can still visit Berlin, Hamburg and other parts of Germany.

@thelme55 Unfortunately, I'll never have the money to travel again. Many reasons, but it's not enjoyable.. the lack of conversation with strangers, since most are on their phone or suspicious of strangers. This is the closest I will get to traveling, lol.

Very cool! I remember crossing over from the NL to Bocholt because a friend said clothes were cheap there, and it looked like some outside sale. That was almost 20 years ago! I just wish I had visited Berlin, Hamburg, etc. I've never been to "The East"
