I had just left my apartment and was heading for the bus stop, when a couple that I know pulled into the parking lot where I was walking.
They got out of their car, and I said I was heading to a local department store (Kohl's) to get new shoes.
The man said, "Why don't you try Ross (a discount store in the shopping center kitty-corner from where I shop for groceries)?" They have nice shoes, and even support insoles you can get if you need them. "
I totally didn't think of that store--it was closer, and I couldn't find my Kohl's membership/credit card anyway.
I went to Ross, and it took me a few minutes to find shoes that were my size and that I could actually put on (for some reason a couple of pairs of shoes I tried that were supposedly my size were really difficult to get on--like my foot was too big for the hole at the top or they weren't flexible enough for me to work my foot in.
Finally I found these, which I could 1) get my foot into, and 2) Didn't feel bad when I walked up and down the aisle with them on.
So, I can finally trash the awful shoes I had.
I still need to cut the elastic that keeps the shoes together, but after that I should be good.

Glad you found some good shoes. It's almost like women's clothes, sizes don't mean what they used to.

Nice that they gave you a reasonable length of elastic to hold them together. Otherwise, you wouldn't be able to try them out walking, would you? What do they look like without your feets in 'em?

Yes, giving the good length of elastic was nice of them! I will take another picture of them so you can see them without my feets in them.
