Peter Armstrong and Hank Colfax are best friends, but their lives couldn't be more different. Peter, the local pastor, is dedicated to his community, spending time visiting the flock, attending meetings, and, with the holiday season approaching, preparing for the Christmas service and live nativity. As a bartender, Hank serves a much different customer base at his family-owned tavern, including a handful of lonely regulars and the local biker gang. When Peter scoffs that Hank has it easy compared to him, the two decide to switch jobs until Christmas Eve. To their surprise, the responsibilities of a bartender and a pastor are similar, but taking on the other's work is more difficult than either Peter or Hank expected. As the two see each other in a new light - and each discovers a new love to cherish - their lives are forever changed. In The Christmas Spirit, Debbie Macomber celebrates the true meaning of the holidays and the inclusive community spirit that binds us all. ~~~~ We have grouchy Grace Anne who, as Peter's church secretary is also his sister. She was burned in the past and it defined her personality hugely. There is Millie, a part-time waitress at the local restaurant and former waitress at the local strip club. She is judged for her job at the strip club, especially by Grace Anne, but she's had a tough life. One must do what one must. And then of course Peter and Hank, two long time friends who despite the difficulties they encounter in their job switches, are sensitive and understanding. The story is being told by an elderly woman to her two grandchildren. There are chapter breaks where she and the children interact outside of the story she is telling. This interaction made the ultimate ending a little predictable. Despite that this was a very quaint and spiritual Christmas story. It's a quick read that could be read any time of year. It's a must-read.

And I have seen none of them. I like the touch of spirituality she puts in her stories. It's not all up in your face.
