In India in the middle of january hindus celebrate makar sankranti and poush parban. At this time in many parts of India the first crops that are harvested are offered to God. People invite neighbours and offer food. Bengalies make sweets like pithe, pathisapta. There is ganga sagar mela or fair at a place where river Ganges meet Bay of Bengal.
