Remembering My Place

One of my favorite stories from history is the story of William Wilberforce and his fight against the slave trade in Great Britain. One of his mentors was John Newton, the author of the song "Amazing Grace". John Newton had been a part of the slave trade. But when he got saved, he abandoned that life. He helped Wilberforce with his research and testimonies to abolish the practice. In one of their conversations, Newton expressed, "Although my memory's fading, I remember two things very clearly: I am a great sinner and Christ is a great Savior.”
This is true of all believers. However, I feel this very personally. There have been so many times that I prioritized other people or things over Christ. I have listened to music and watched movies that would bring dishonor to Christ. I have cared more about pleasing people than Jesus. I have harbored anger and tried to manipulate circumstances in my own wisdom. I despise my sin because it put Jesus on the cross.
I am so thankful for God's amazing grace. The message of that song is timeless. I am reminded of the Bible verses:
Romans 3:23 For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.
I John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
"Amazing Grace
how sweet the sound
that saved a wretch like me..."
