Shane Gillis? He was unknown (by his own words) until he was hired by SNL. They find some Asian slurs, and the next day, they fire him, but he gets a ton of popularity and support from the stand-up community, and now his specials, or even appearances can get him millions. I think he's funny, especially with a group of friends. I wouldn't have looked him up if he hadn't got in trouble. Federico Fellini said how a movie was guaranteed to be a hit if the vatican condemned it, so of course, he starts "La Dolce Vita" with a helicopter holding a statue of Mary, while asking the girls suntanning below for their numbers, and it was a hit. But his best stuff was made before.

Sometimes, telling someone to avoid something just puts a spotlight on that something, making it even more well-known.
