Vlad Tepes (Vlad the Impaler)- Dracula Was born in 1430 in Sighisoara, where he lived 6 years before his father, Vlad Dracul ( the son of Mircea the Old ) and a Knight of the Dragon's Order, became the ruler of Wallachia in 1436. He was ruling prince of Wallachia ( the southern part of actual Romania) in three turns: three months in 1448, then from 1456 until 1462 and last time for two months in 1476. Known as one of the most feared enemies of the Ottoman Empire, Vlad Dracula started organizing the state, the army, the law, applying death penalty by impaling all those he considered enemies: robbers at the trading routes, beggars, cunning priests, treacherous noblemen and the Turks The procedure was: a wooden stake was carefully driven through the victim's backbone without touching any vital nerve, ensuring about 48 hours of conscious suffering before death. Bram Stoker, the Anglo-Irish author of "Dracula " novel ( 1897 ) moved the legend of Dracula to Transylvania region, to Bargau pass, one passage between Transylvania and Moldova counties, near Bistrita. After this novel the movie-makers have remade the story countless times starting with silent movie "Nosferatu" in 1922. The Historian - The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova
A fantastic book based on Vlad the Impaler is "The Historian" by Elizabeth Kostova. The historical elements in this work of fiction are astounding. It is really an excellent book, that I would recommend anyone with an interest in Dracula or Vlad read.
