Around the sea beaches the tamarisk trees are lovely.

I have a suspicion one of our neighbors (an Indian family) has this tree in their front garden. I was curious about the odd flowers of their tree, but couldn't figure out what it was. Reading your post and after checking tamarisk, suddenly the whole thing makes sense somehow!

Don't think I have seen tamarisk trees in my location. Do they only grow in India?
