Uh oh. Trouble in Florida.

I had not thought much about the effects of ultra-conservatism on our nation's colleges and universities. New College in Sarasota Florida is a free-thinker kind of college. It may be a bit too "hippyish" for me personally, but it's a good school. It caters especially to smart kids who saw themselves as a bit odd in high school: kids with (what used to be called) Asperger's, kids who are gay, kids who are nerdy, etc. Apparently, Governor Ron DeSantis is trying to gut this institution. If I read the article right, he has already replaced the Board of Trustees with Conservatives, and his minions are threatening the current faculty with being fired. I had not heard about this until this morning. My conservative side has been hoping for a viable Republican presidential candidate for 2024, but maybe Ron DeSantis is not it. Republicans: Is Mike ("Glad I Didn't Get Hung") Pence a "better man" than Ron DeSantis? I haven't heard much about him recently. Do you think he might run?
Professors at the New College of Florida are using personal email because they’re afraid of being subpoenaed. Students are concerned, too. For years, students have come to this public liberal arts college on the western coast of Florida because they were s

I'm anything but conservative, Pence, like George W. could be easily led down a scary path by appointees like a Rumsfeld & the VP led George.

"My man," James McMurtry wrote a rather scathing somg about Dubya. I'll see if I can find it.

Even if Pence runs for the nomination he most likely won't get it. If Trump wants it, it's his, unless he's been convicted or flees the country. Absent Trump, DeSantis is a shoo-in with the MAGA base because he hates all the same people they do.

It will take awhile, I would think, to convict Trump.

It probably sounds worse then it is. You know the more drama you stir up the more attention something will get.

@TheHorse I can understand that. I mean, no one should lose a job over politics. And, sadly, this country is becoming more political by the day. I was talking with a music group on tour, and one of them was giving another one a brief crash course in U.S. history. And, I made a comment about how for a country claiming to be so united, it couldn't be more devoted.

@kaylachan Divided? I agree with that. People become entrenched in their views. That inhibits listening and learning.

Eh, most politicians do that. I'm only sort of kidding. He must have some strengths. What are they?

That is not good at all and these kids should be allowed to finish their schooling at an institution where they feel safe and accepted. With his stupid meddling, he just might make a lot of resentful enemies and troublesome kids seeking revenge,

Good for DeSantis. This needs to be done. Minions. What a classy word. Not.

LOL. As a professor, I would hate to see professors lose their jobs over politics. I feel fairly safe where I teach.

@CarolDM Where is this quotation from? How do you define classical education? I DO teach classic psychologists and other thinkers in my classes. From Freud, I go back to Oedipus. When discussing sexuality, I go back to Zeus and Hera, and their amusing argument, which only poor Tiresias could resolve. When discussing Jung, I go back to Socrates, and his emphasis on "balance," in Plato's Republic. I am NOT against classical education. I bet some Moderates, and even Liberals, would be OK with my emphasis on classical thinking. I will ask @JamesHxstatic, @DWDavis, @FourWalls, @LouAvul, and others to weigh in.

@TheHorse I don't disagree with his reasons... "DeSantis wants to "abolish ‘diversity, equity, and inclusion’ and replace it with ‘equality, merit, and colorblindness,’ restructure the academic departments to reflect the new pedagogical approach, hire new faculty with expertise in constitutionalism, free enterprise, civic virtue, family life, religious freedom, and American principles Establish a graduate school for training teachers in classical education."
