There is an interesting history about name of sweets in bengal.

Presently there is a brown sweet in bengal called ladykani. It is soaked in sweet water and looks round. In other parts of India the sweet is called gulab jamun. One of the popular sweet makers more than 100 years ago served it as experiment before Lady Canning. She was the wife of Lord Canning. She like it and asked the sweet makers to continue making it. So local people started calling the sweet ladukani.
