Tomorrow, Friday, 5/5, I am taking my class on a field trip to a local historic village of sorts. The "village" we are visiting never existed. It is a collection of buildings that have been moved to the park to create a simulated early to mid-nineteenth-century building.
It's been several years since I visited the village, even though it's just down the road and I pass the entrance several times a year. We used to go with the Cub Scouts.
This field trip is the first these kids or I have been on since March of 2020. They are very much looking forward to it. I am looking forward to it being over.
Do you remember taking field trips when you were in school?

I do and loved them for most part. I can see your point of view. A lot different but not so different. People more crazy now but they were then too just more under the radar. Point being a lot of pressure for you to get the wild crazy kids home and safe.
The best part is if you are successful you will have showed them a whole new world and made their world that much better. Which actually helps with their crazy attitude. Discipline comes in knowing why things are the way they are not forcing why things are the way they are. Meaning you still have options where most go crazy when they feel forced.

@DWDavis To the airport when I was in 6th grade. That was interesting, and one of our classmate's parents had a private plane, and the dad took us up in small groups..awesome! Of course, for liability reasons that kind of thing wouldn't be allowed today..not at least without signing your life away.

@snowy22315 That does sound like a fun field trip. You're right. We probably wouldn't be able to do that these days.

Ooh, Mr. Kotter!! Mr. Kotter!!!
The last field trip I remember taking was in the fourth grade, when we went to the Louisville Zoo. Of course, you could call my trips to museums today “field trips.”

When I taught public middle school, we took the kids to the NC Zoo out in Asheboro. Some of the staff thought we were crazy taking our unruly bunch of kids there. Don't you know it was the kids we were most worried about who behaved the best and never let us out of their sight? They'd never been more than a few miles from home before.

@DWDavis — that’s amazing. Then again, it isn’t. The wonders of something new can overwhelm the most unruly individual.

@FourWalls Most of these kids came from economically challenged homes and would probably have never had the chance to travel to the Zoo had we not taken them. I've always held the hope that seeing something of the world outside their desperate, impoverished neighborhood might have inspired them to rise above their circumstances and take their education more seriously.

The kids had a great time, and we had perfect weather. Sunny, not too hot. They loved the scavenger hunt, getting to run all over the village trying to find the items on the list. I hope the teacher who takes over for me makes it an annual outing.

@DWDavis Oh, it was more my shyness, and I just wanted to get through the school day, and leave. I had great teachers and good friends, but talking to unfamiliar people was hard for me. We went to the zoo, toured the state capital (one teacher was related to a state rep so every year he'd kindly show classes around), The Cowboy Hall of Fame, The Bureau of Engraving and Printing (we loved getting little bags of shredded money)...the only place I disliked was the zoo and Martin Nature Park because the time of year we went, we never had cool weather. My favorite was The Science Museum. As an adult, I'd still love the place.
I will admit to disliking the fact that we went to the same places year after year, but it's got to be difficult to constantly find new places to visit.
