The big cats of Kuno and our Indian vets

The sanctuary of Kuno, Madhya Pradesh has lost two big cats and three cubs. The mature ones lost their lives because of infection and callous attitude of the forest officials and the cubs died because of lack of prenatal and post natal care. Just because the leaopards ( that were brought from Namibia) were set free in wild in the sanctuary doesn't mean they are safe and fine. The climate of two countries are completely. Therefore it was essential to constantly monitor their movement and food intake as well as their health conditions. Wasn't it foolish to leave a single female to mate with two males who killed her. The cubs were born weak. The mother should have been kept in confinement the moment her pregnancy was detected. She should have been given sufficient food and proper tonics and medicines so that the feotus grew into healthy cubs. The cubs and the mother were seen lying in the scrotching heat of Kuno sanctuary. Such little weak cubs can definitely not bear the heat and therefore three might have died. Our Indian vets need to be more humane than doctors. They forget some simple careful precautions that should be taken while dealing with animals which results in their death. No special care are taken of animals in zoos or sanctuary and the result is their death and extinction. Leopards can still be seen in the forests of Western Odisha. It's high time the forest officials and doctors take steps to preserve them and the vets given more holistic and advanced training.

The Indian climate does not suit these big cats as you call them and our Government should have known about it

The wild animals growing in a different country country will not accept environmental change. Wild animals are more sensitive than domestic animals.

@aninditasen It is strange that this knowledgeable is not available with the powers that be. Modi went on saying for seventy years we did not have them. And now he knows why.

Sorry to hear about this situation. I feel for the animals. They should be preserved in their own habitat.

I don't understand why people won't do better by animals.

Compassion comes when you get personally involved with the animals, not when you treat them mechanically.

Moving animals from one place to another disturbs their nervous system, especially wild animals.

I think unless and until the vets are able to care for them properly they should be given no more big cats

Both countries should stop playing politics with the lives of animals for a few bucks. The country that sends will do that as it gets money from India and government of India is wasting public money.
