If you live in the US, have the churches in your area put out a display of American flags in celebration of the upcoming Independence Day holiday? Did they do the same for Memorial Day at the end of May? K and I were on our way from our favorite diner to the grocery store yesterday morning and passed a church that had outlined its parking lot and property line with American flags spaced about 5 yards apart. They are not the only church to do so in this area. The church/school I just retired from does the same. Do you believe it is appropriate for a church to make such a patriotic/nationalistic display? I wonder if French churches display the tricolor this way on Bastille Day.

I haven't really thought about it until now but l don't see anything wrong with it, in my opinion.

I wonder what Jesus would think if he visited a church founded in his name and found it surrounded by a national flag.

@DWDavis lt would not be all the time, just for a period. The bible says render unto Ceasar what is Cessar's and to the Lord what is the Lord's.

@Kandae11 That's an interesting way to look at the situation.

I am not sure about the churches, but several local things like schools, the DMV and other places with electronic displays have fireworks, flags and other emblems of the 4th. on them now.

@DWDavis Last night, I was pretty sleepy having gotten up earlier than usual, and somebody with some kind of single shot rifle shot into the air or something about every 15 minutes. I would just be dropping off to sleep, and I would hear another shot. I think they quit about 11:40. If it had gone on past 12 I would have called the police.

We see those around town, too. And folks in the neighborhood have started popping fireworks at night. So far, they've been courteous enough to stop before 11 pm.

Well, since churches are made up of members of the community, I think it is important that they support those members of the community. One of the ways to express that support is through celebrating patriotic events. However, churches should be cautious about what they are celebrating, as just because one is being patriotic does not mean it is right. Think of the situation with Russia in its invasion of Ukraine. Is it right for the churches inside Russia to celebrate Russian patriotism, given that the situation is what it is right now? It's really a slippery slope and one I'm sure is open for debate. I think that churches should remember that their main focus and main support should be on serving and worshiping God.

Well stated, and I agree shows of patriotism are not always appropriate such as the situation with Russia's immoral war against Ukraine.

Churches, parks and private people put out flags. I think it’s appropriate.

I don't find anything wrong with it. I've never seen churches here in Ohio do that. Hope you have a good 4th.

My church has an American flag inside the sanctuary as well as the Christian flag all year round. I think it is appropriate if that is simply what they want to do. Thanks to those who fought we have freedom of religion or from religion, whichever they choose. I’m glad my church has one inside it. I’m sure Jesus appreciates any church and country that still welcomes Him. I imagine gossip bothers Him, or robbery, or murder. A flag in a church? Unless it was a country run by ISIS, I doubt He’d care.
