Almost Burning Down the House

when I was a kid I spent the night with my cousin, and after my aunt and uncle went to bed, we decided to play with fire. I was young, but old enough to know better, but somehow that didn't stop me. We scraped out half and orange which made an orange bowl fire pit. Then we proceeded to play, "Will it Burn?" We put in any, scraps of paper or other items to see how large a fire we could make with each object. I personally thought it would magically stay in the orange. It was all fun and games until the rug caught on fire, then we did an amazing job of stupidly staring as the flames were growing. Suddenly, my aunt arrived and deftly put out the fire, and she was not very happy with us. The most regrettable part of this story is the rug was very large and brand new, and now it had a large black spot right in the middle of the floor, and they didn't have money to burn (sorry, this happened so long ago that I can finally laugh at it). She forgave us though because she was just a sweet woman, but I felt terrible I hurt her that way, and I felt sad for many years when I thought of it. Isn't this something Beevis and Butthead would have done? I did learn my lesson though, and I've treated fire with great respect my entire life, so in a foolish, expensive and irrational way it was a great learning experience for my future. Do you have an impressive hooligan story from your childhood?

What a bad child you were. One of my kids at five decided he would not wait for me to fix breakfast. He got out a plastic bowl and him and his younger sister put some eggs in the bowl shells and all. Turned the burner on and the plastic melted all over the stove. Lucky I smell it in the air.

I should have been spanked and grounded the rest of my life. I think I didn't understand how powerful fire is, still no excuse.

When I was in 5th grade I faked sick to stay home from school. My mom went to work, and I got bored that afternoon and started setting paper on fire. I remember I was watching the Newlywed game on TV when flames started shooting out of the waste basket. I noticed they were about to set the curtain shears on fire!! I threw the shears on top of the floor lamp and went back and forth dousing the wastebasket with water. Fortunately, I managed to put it all out, but the evidence was in the large trash can. My mother started quizzing me about it, where I had to admit what happened. Thank God she didn't tell my dad, or there would have been Hell to pay. I think she thought he would be mad at her for letting me stay home.

@misunderstood_zombie I know, when my uncles were about that age, they burned the barn down. My dad who was much older was supposed to be watching them. Of course he had a ball game on, and paid them no mind.

I'm glad you were able to put it out. Fire just facinates kids for some reason.

Bless your heart! That would have bothered me too, but it’s wonderful she was so forgiving. I remember years ago, the people behind Beavis & Butthead were sued after a woman’s son set fire to the house after watching an episode of the show. I would have asked her why he was watching that in the first place.

Really, I never let my kids watch it but probably my husband did if I wasn't around. He was the good cop to my bad.

My cousin, who happens to be a nun now, was also my best friend and we do sleep overs. Mostly, she would sleep in our house. And we had too many memories that were just too funny and too stupid. She wished she was me and I wished I was hers. She wished she had my family and I wished I had hers. So we thought that maybe if we exchanged saliva, then our souls would switch! So we did that. We both spat on a plate. And exchanged saliva. It's yucky but we never thought of that when we were kids.

Wow, I guess it didn't work. When I was a kid we would cut ourselves and rub our blood together to be bloodbrothers and sisters. No one does that anymore.

I'm glad it was only the rug. I'm sorry it caught fire. I'm glad it gave you a respect for fire since.
