Tomatoes in India too expensive. Who's playing the trick?

It since few days that tomatoes in India have become so expensive ( Rs 100 to 150), that it has become just a name in the common man's kitchen. With most states of India having their own production of tomatoes, they need not be imported and yet this price rise.
In Odisha each district grow their own produce of tomatoes and farmers are screaming that they are getting hardly 7 to 10 rupees per kg, then it's for sure that the middlemen and the government is playing very dirty game.
No government has got the right to spoil production like this just for their vested interest. The poor farmer is losing both money and his produce that he can't store for long. All farmers can't afford the cost of a cold storage in India. Who's eating up the cream?

I wish they could do that. Some farmers have land to grow but no finance to travel and here comes the greedy middle men.

I know but it's strange this time as tomato is produced abundantly in most states of India, especially Odisha.

That doesn't happen for small farmers in India. They remain poor throughout their life.

@nela13 I know it's very unfair. It's here that they are cheated by the middlemen. Their produce should be acquired my the government.

Maybe. It's a purposeful crisis. This happens in India often.

It is terrible depriving the common man of some staple food. Most Indian dishes use tomatoes.

Big tomatoes here are like 85 cents for one. I love tomatoes so best I can do is get canned tomatoes, The fresh ones even don't taste very good,

Here fresh tomatoes are very tasty. We use them in Indian dishes and for salads and chutney too.

thanks Arunimaji lovely share. You mentioned tomatoes. Even ginger, brinjal, chillies in Calcutta have become very expensive. There must be illegal hoarding go on.

There maybe some illegal hoarding but small farmers are suffering as some families have stopped buying tomatoes.

Unfortunately, it seems that the middlemen and some government officials are engaging in an underground game and dancing on the same tune, ignoring the interests of ordinary people and farmers.

That's to keep the farmers hungry and deprived. This government has become a thorn in the common man's eye.
