Have you ever had a pet dragonfly?

I had one the other day for a minute or two. His name was Little Guy. He was a Green Darner Dragonfly. That's him in the picture. Of course, I don't know if Little Guy was a boy or a girl. How do you tell such things about dragonflies? This has been a banner year for dragonflies in our yard. Are dragonflies common in your area?

We usually have a good number of them, what with the pond in our woods and the stream at the end of our property.

@DWDavis The pond was almost dry the last couple of years. Something shifted here and it is now mostly a huge hole in the ground

@wolfgirl569 A shift in the water table here after Hurricane Floyd back in 1999 is how we got our pond. That and the huge live oak that the storm knocked over, taking several surrounding smaller trees with it. Their roots left the hole, and the water came bubbling up. It's been there ever since.

Little Guy was on the ground and seemed to be having trouble untangling from the grass. I offered my thumb. He climbed on and stayed for several minutes.

@DWDavis That's amazing! Anytime I go near, they just fly away .

I don’t know if they are common around here, but I have seen a couple of them so far this summer.

We have a great habitat for them with the pond in our woods and a stream close by.

Dragonflies may look ferocious but are gentle and harmless.

Oh how fun it landed right on you like that and you were able to get a photo in time. I’ve had butterflies do that once or twice.
