Yesterday's art class was the second week of acrylics. We were doing sunflowers and we were using palette knives.
My taxi came just on time this week. It was the minibus taxi again that took me.
When I got there I got myself a cup of green tea and a biscuit. When the lady with the little dog came I gave her 2 of the photos I'd taken of them last time I'd seen them. She loved them and asked me how much she owed me! I said, nothing, no, I don't want anything for them. She said, but these cost money, are you sure? I said, yes, it's fine. The little dog was sniffing at my walking stick and sheltering under our table!
After the tutor demonstrated what we were doing and we did some practise exercises with palette knives in our sketch books, we chose which picture we were going to copy from.
Instead of putting masking tape around my paper, I drew a border with pencil. I then drew out the outline of the sunflower with brown umber acrylic paint and the larger of the two brushes. After that I painted in the background with purple, pink and blue acrylic paint using the larger of the two brushes. When it came to do inbetween the petals and leaves, I used the smaller brush.
Then it came to the part where we used the palette knives. I started stippling in the centre of the sunflower with burnt umber. Then when that was drying I started on the petals, using cadmium yellow, orange, red, a mixture red and orange, a mixture of yellow and red and a mixture of yellow and white. Down the bottom left was a kind of burgundy shade, so I mixed red with ultramarine blue for that. Then I did some of the leaves in a couple of different shades of green. Paul said, "Seeing as that's a work of art, maybe you should insure it!" Everybody burst out laughing! I was laughing the loudest. I said, "Yeah, I'll insure it for a pound!"
I didn't manage to finish it. It was about 4:40pm and I asked the tutor how long it will take to dry, and she said it would be touch dry in a couple of hours! So I said, "How will I get it home?" She said, "Carefully!" She saw the look on my face and she said she'd put it infront of the fan to see if that would speed up the drying process.
While my painting was drying I went to look at some of the things on sale at the back of the hall. I decided to buy an A3 pad of acrylic paper and a little pot of masking fluid with applicator. I knew the masking fluid was £3 because they'd been talking about it earlier, but the acrylic paper pad didn't have a price on it. I asked one of the tutors how much it was. I had got out £12 in change. The tutor said the acrylic paper pad was £9. So I had just enough change to pay for them. I put the masking fluid in my pencil case and then put the acrylic paper pad and my pencil case in my carry case that I've got everything in. They only just fit!
The tutor asked us to get our paintings and put them on the floor so everyone could see them. I went and got my painting from infront of the fan and tested it, and it was dry. So I put it on the floor with the others.
I saw my taxi arrive and he beeped to indicate he was there. We picked up our pictures and I put mine in my case with everything else and fastened it. It only just fastened.
I went out to the taxi and went home. When I got in I showed my Mum my hands and said, "I got more on me than on the paper!"
I had my dinner, and later that night I commandeered the dining room table to finish it off. I got out my acrylic paints, my palette knives, some old kitchen paper, my board that I use to paint on and some baking paper to use as a palette. I put some newspaper down on the kitchen table first, then put everything out and put my paints out on the baking paper. The colours that I had were not all the same as we had at art class. I finished off the leaves and petals and then I finished stippling in the centre of the sunflower with a mix of ultramarine blue and violet. It took me another hour and a half to finish. I told my Mum not to peek!
After I'd finished, I put the painting in my bedroom to dry and put everything away. Then I had a vegan magnum ice lolly before I went to bed.
We were going to go shopping this morning, but decided not to because it's raining quite heavily. Mum was supposed to get some of her repeat prescription today, but she'll probably get my step-dad to fetch it for her.
I hope you are all well.
Have a great day.
