Have you ever saved a life?

Are you someone or something's hero? I don't call myself a hero but there are 4 times in my life when I saved someone or something's life. 1) I walking home on a very cold night in the middle of February when I heard someone calling to me. It was a young man and he asked me if I could help him. He was new in town, was staying with a friend but didn't know the city very well at all. He was lost and couldn't find his friend's house. The temperature was -29° C (-20° F ) and all this man was wearing over his clothes was a thin hoodie. My first thought was "you must be freezing!" I asked him what street his buddy lives on. He couldn't remember. I asked if his buddy lives in this particular area. "Within a 3 mile radius" was his reply. He didn't have a phone with him and neither did I. (It was about 11:00 pm) Running out of ideas I asked him if there were any identifiable landmarks close to where this buddy lives. (Gas station, grocery store, drug store...etc) He remembered that there was an Ultramar gas station/convenience store near his buddy. I knew then exactly where he was. The Ultramar was only a couple of blocks away from where we were standing. Instead of giving him directions to the Ultramar I told him I would walk with him until we get there. When the gas station came into view he stopped at an intersection, looked around and said "This is my buddy's street! I can see his house from here!" "Then get ur butt out of the cold." I said. 2) One day my cat started to cough up hairball. She's a long hair cat and her hairballs are huge. She began running around erratically and was panicking, trying to cough this thing up but it got caught in her throat. I noticed the end of it just inside her mouth so I reached in, grabbed it and pulled it out. Poor kitty. She was so frightened as was I. She made a speedy recovery. 3) I was having a problem with mice in an apartment I loved in a number of years ago. The exterminator came in and set a few sticky traps that the mice were proficient in avoiding...except this one mouse. I heard the squeaking coming from the kitchen and noticed a mouse in one of the traps. The more it struggled, the more stuck to the trap it became. He was just a baby. So tiny that I felt sorry for him. I took the trap apart and laid it out flat. Next I covered a knitting needle with butter to grease it and peeled the little critter off of the glued trap and into a huge box then set him free outside. He gave a huge jump then looked me directly in the eye to say thank you. 4) One late night I heard the smoke detector from the apartment adjacent to mine go off. It was beeping for about 10 minutes but no one was trying to shut it off. I began to think that maybe the tenants went out and left the stove on. I needed to alert the on site building manager but it was late. I cringed at the thought of having to wake them up but I did. I told them what was happening and what my fears were. They came up to check it. After knocking on the door and getting no answer from the tenant, they unlocked the door and entered. Smoke came billowing out of the apartment into the hallway. Of course the fire department was notified and the building evacuated. Later I got a visit from the building manager thanking me profusely. She told me that the tenant who lives in that apartment is deaf and was in bed sleeping at the time. He didn't hear the smoke detector. What saved him from smoke inhalation was he had his bedroom door shut. The managers got him safely out of the apartment. Those are my heroic deed stories. I would love to hear yours.

Wow, very cool...you are an angel who walks among us. I saved a bird who had fallen out of nest once. I give blood which may save lives. Other than those can't really think of anything...but to be honest I am always half on the lookout for something heroic to do.

You were a hero in all of those situations. One of my cats got ahold of a spool of thread and had it wrapped around him. I was lucky that I got home in time. I got scissors and started cutting the thread. It was so tight the poor cat could not move at all.

Cats are curious creatures. They can get themselves into some fairly tight and dangerous situations. Glad you got to him in time.

You were definitely a hero to those people and the animals. No, I haven't saved anyone's life.

You have been the right person at the right place for these folks and animals. I am glad you were able to intervene. I was an EMT/paramedic for 5-6 years so there were different people I helped in a variety of situations. I don't consider myself a hero. I had the know-how to help and I am thankful for that.
